Instead Di Maria moved to Old Trafford for a British record fee of £59.7m.
But reports in France claim PSG will test United's resolve in the summer when they will have more room to manoeuvre under FFP.
And worryingly for Red Devils fans, it appears Di Maria could welcome a move to the French champions.
In an interview with French broadcaster Telefoot earlier in the season, the winger said: "Playing in the French league would please a lot of players.
"Now I’m in the English league. But you never know, there is a lot of movements in football. You can never predict where you’re going to play."
He added: "It could have been a good experience for me to go to Paris.
"I know I’m still young, perhaps I’ll go to PSG one day. I don’t know how it will all end."
