Service Dog Jumps In Front Of Bus To Protect his Blind Owner in New York.

A service dog is being praised for  leaping in front of a school minibus to protect his blind owner.

The dog, named Figo, was crossing the street with his handler, Audrey Stone, in Brewster, New York,  when the bus driver failed to yield.
Figo reportedly placed himself between the bus and Stone to take most of the hit.
The dog owner,Stone, 62, suffered minor injuries and it would have been worse if the Dog didn't shield her said Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo.

Figo's leg was mildly injured, said Paul Schwartz, who manages the Xtra Mart gas station at the intersection and ran to the scene to help.

"I don't know if (the driver) thought (Stone) was going to move faster, but it looks like the dog tried to take most of the hit for her," said Schwartz, who lives in Mahopac.

"There were 15 EMTs and people all around her and the dog didn't want to leave her side," Schwartz said. "He was flopping over to her and she didn't want him to get away from her, either. She kept screaming, 'Where's Figo? Where's Figo? Where's Figo?' We kept telling her he was fine."

Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo told CBS New York that Figo refused to leave Stone's side at the accident scene.

"The dog did not want to leave the side of the woman at all ... it was the same thing with her, she did not want to leave the dog’s side," Del Gardo said. "She was very, very concerned about the dog. My officers that were there and the fire department assured her everything would be fine."

After the accident, which left Figo with  a mildly injured leg and Stone with minor injuries , Figo remained calm, trying to reach Stone as responders bandaged his leg. “He wasn't barking or crying or yelping. But he kept pulling toward [Stone],” said Paul Swartz, who witnessed the accident and came to the scene to help.

The brave dog is now being treated at Middlebranch Veterinary, where the newspaper reports he will undergo surgery on his leg. Stone is being treated for her injuries at a local hospital as well. She’s arranged for friends to care for Figo as she recovers.

Both dog and owner are expected to make a full recovery.

The bus driver was given a summons for failing to yield for a pedestrian.

The driver of the Brewster school bus, carrying two kindergartners to St. Lawrence O'Toole Childhood Learning Center, told police he didn't see the pair crossing the road as they made their way home at about 8:15 Monday morning.

But the dog saw the bus coming and leaped into action.
